Buck Suzuki Legacy Bursary Recipient 2021

TBuck is pleased to be able to support Roshni Mangar, as she pursues her MSc at the University of British Columbia. Roshni is the recipient of the 2021 Buck Suzuki Legacy Bursary.

“Hello! My name is Roshni Mangar. I was born in Mauritius and grew up in both India and Mauritius.

I am an MSc student and Ocean Leader Fellow at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

My thesis focuses on the bottom trawling industry in Asia. Bottom trawling is one of the most destructive forms of fishing, effectively clear-cutting the ocean. I am keen to understand the fisher's relationship to the industry by exploring their attachment, history and cultural association.

While my research work at UBC is a priority, I believe in giving back to the community and that education is more than academics. I am passionate about human rights issues and social justice in tangent with my love for animals and the ocean. I currently volunteer as the Recording Secretary for the Component 1 and Executive Committee, and reviewer of hardship funds for the CUPE Local (2278); Chair of the Grant Committee for the IOF Student Society (IOFSS); co-Chair of the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee at IOFSS; and a core member of the EDI group at IOF.

I strongly believe that the bonds we create with our community are essential to the amelioration of our society. I aim to not only promote change via my research but also by my day-to-day actions.

Thank you to the Buck Suzuki Legacy for awarding me this bursary!”

The Buck Suzuki Legacy Bursary is a $1000 bursary granted annually in memory of our namesake, Tatsuro "Buck" Suzuki, a fish harvester and advocate for fish habitat protection. By supporting the education of young harvesters, and students of ocean studies, we are supporting strong and sustainable ecosystems and communities for future generations. The Buck Suzuki Bursary is open to students in fisheries or marine-related studies in the trades and at the undergraduate and graduate levels annually. Applications for the 2022 Buck Suzuki Legacy Bursary will open in Summer 2022.
