We were founded in 1981 to prevent pollution, a significant threat to B.C.'s marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. This work has been central to our organization since then. For instance, we led opposition to the Kemano II hydro-electric project in the 1980s and 1990s and partnered with other organizations to successfully block the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline between the mid-2000s and 2015.
Our pollution-related work is currently focused on reducing mariners’ impacts on marine ecosystems through our OceanSmart program and by working with fishermen to reduce ghost gear in B.C. waters. We are also advocating for the protection of B.C.’s marine and estuary environments from petrochemicals, and herbicides and pesticides.
