Quota and License Reform

The quota and licensing regime currently regulating most B.C. fisheries is failing to sustain B.C.'s coastal communities. Based on a market-driven philosophy, they have transformed access to our fisheries into a commodity. This has increased their value far beyond what most fishermen can afford, leaving many to lease the right to put their nets in the water for up to 80 percent of their estimated catch value. If prices drop during the fishing season, they must bear the loss - with negative impacts on their entire coastal community. We have published several reports regarding this issue:
