Coastal communities in B.C. are amidst significant change. Fishing – once the economic foundation for these towns – is facing increasingly complex management regimes, a loss of essential fishing infrastructure and inter-generational knowledge, and climate change. These forces are taking a social, cultural, economic, and ecological toll on coastal regions, with many young people leaving for urban centers, increasing food insecurity and addiction leaving some residents faced with increasingly common physical and mental health challenges.
Our work in this area focuses on helping identify and contribute to solutions to the most pressing issues facing B.C.'s coastal communities, supporting young fishermen, and advocating for the greater inclusion of wild fish in sustainable coastal food systems in B.C.
