Ocean Day Victoria Aerial Art Event 2008
On June 4, 2008 one thousand school aged children will gather at Clover Point to form the image of a wild salmon. This aerial art image will be performed in celebration of International Ocean Day and provide a multi-faceted learning opportunity for children of Victoria. Students representing public, private, home-schooling and special education services will be invited to participate
Beyond generating awareness, Ocean Day events empower our youth to take action regarding environmental issues. This year, after discussing the many problems facing wild salmon, students will focus on waste management as a means of keeping our oceans and rivers clean.
We will pose the question ‘Can we live without disposable plastic bags?’ Children will discuss alternatives to plastic bags and identify barriers to behavioural change as well as write letters to express their opinions. These letters will be forwarded to the CRD.
All participating groups will partake in a ‘litterless lunch week’ to generate awareness about packaging. Finally, on the day of the aerial art event, children will participate in a beach clean up on Dallas Rd.
